What it is, and why it matters
The CBC 586 is a Brazilian 12-gauge pump-action shotgun produced by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos, also exported to the US market under the Magtech MT 586 name. A Remington 870-pattern repeater built on an all-steel receiver, bolt, barrel and magazine tube with dual action bars to prevent binding, it chambers both 2.75-inch and 3-inch (76mm) shells and feeds from a full-length tubular magazine holding up to seven rounds. Offered in riot, police, and sporting configurations with hardwood furniture and barrels from roughly 19 to 28 inches, it has seen wide service as a riot and security gun with Brazilian forces and was exported to police agencies including in Croatia.
CBC, founded in 1926, is Brazil's dominant ammunition manufacturer and parent of the Magtech, Sellier & Bellot, and (from 2015) Taurus brands. The 586 was its workhorse pump shotgun, made for a Brazilian government contract and distributed by Magtech in the US market (the original MT-586 was discontinued in 1994, with the MT-586-2 imported 1993-1995) before the later polymer-stocked CBC Pump 12 / Taurus ST-12 tactical design.
Riot/security variants typically use an 18.5-to-19-inch (470mm) cylinder-bore barrel with a 7-round tube; sporting models were offered with 24- and 28-inch barrels. A later MT-586-2 variant added twin extractors for improved extraction/ejection. Surplus examples have reached the civilian market via Croatian police disposals.
