What it is, and why it matters
The Cugir Model 95 (Pistol Md. 95) is a Romanian semi-automatic service pistol, a domestic copy of the Israeli IMI Jericho 941 with minor modifications. Chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, it is a short-recoil, locked-breech design fed from a double-stack magazine, with an all-steel frame and slide that made it reliable but comparatively heavy. Romania reverse-engineered the Jericho through the early 1990s and adopted the resulting pistol in 1995, with an initial production run of roughly 10,000 units for the Romanian Army.
Romania set out after the Cold War to replace its aging Carpați Md. 74 sidearm with a modern double-stack 9mm. Rather than license a Western design, engineers at Cugir reverse-engineered the IMI Jericho 941, producing the Model 95 in 1995.
Considered too heavy by police; the lightened Model 98 trimmed the dust cover and skeletonized the backstrap under a wraparound grip. A small additional batch of about 1,100 pistols was produced in 2021.
