About
What it is, and why it matters
The Extar EP9 Carbine is the 16-inch-barreled rifle version of Extar USA's lightweight 9mm platform, introduced around 2020. Sharing the EP9 pistol's polymer AR-pattern architecture and Glock-magazine compatibility, the carbine adds a 16.25-inch black-nitrided barrel (threaded 1/2-28), a six-position collapsible stock, and a mass-delayed blowback system with a separate dynamic bolt weight to soften recoil. It weighs about 5 pounds 2 ounces unloaded and extends to 35 inches overall (31.25 inches collapsed). Controls follow the AR-15 layout with a reciprocating side charging handle, single-stage trigger, and patented last-round bolt hold-open. The carbine ships with an 18-round Glock-pattern magazine and accepts up to 33-round sticks. MSRP started around $499.
After the EP9 pistol found a following, Extar offered a non-NFA rifle-length variant so buyers could skip the SBR paperwork while keeping the same Glock-fed, polymer-light design. Reviewers at American Rifleman and The Truth About Guns praised the carbine's soft-shooting mass-delayed action and budget price, though Extar later paused production of the carbine line.
Production has been paused by Extar with no forecast for resumption (status: limited_production). MSRP started at ~$499. Made in Phoenix, Arizona. Reviews report a six-position Mission First Tactical stock. Not legal for sale in CA, DE, IL, NY, NJ, HI, CT, MA, WA in carbine form.
