The FEG AMP-69 (Automata Modositott Puskagranatos, 'Automatic Modified Rifle Grenade [Launcher]') is a Hungarian selective-fire assault rifle derived from the AKM, specifically designed for launching rifle grenades. Manufactured by FEG in Budapest, the AMP-69 entered service with the Hungarian People's Army in 1974. While retaining the standard AKM gas-operated long-stroke piston action and rotating bolt in 7.62x39mm, the AMP-69 incorporates several modifications for its grenade-launching role: a removable grenade-launching spigot fitted to the muzzle, a gas port shutoff valve to redirect all propellant gases for grenade propulsion, a relocated front sight base moved rearward toward the gas block, and a folding optical grenade sight mounted on the left side of the receiver. The rifle can fire standard 7.62x39mm ammunition in semi-automatic or full-automatic modes, or launch PGK anti-tank and PGR fragmentation grenades using special blank cartridges at a muzzle velocity of 93 m/s to an effective range of 450 meters.
The AMP-69 represents Hungary's unique solution to the squad-level anti-armor problem during the Cold War. Rather than adopting a separate grenade launcher like the Soviet RPG-7 or the Western M203, Hungary chose to integrate grenade-launching capability directly into a standard AKM-pattern rifle, allowing the grenadier to function as a regular rifleman when not engaging armored targets.
The AMP-69's weight of 4.24 kg is listed without magazine but with grenade sight attached. Some sources (Military Factory) list weight as high as 5.44 kg, likely including additional accessories. The 5-round magazine option is for grenade-launching blank cartridges; standard 30-round AKM magazines are used for regular ammunition. The PGK (Pancel Granatkidobo Kumulativ) HEAT grenade has a 62mm warhead capable of penetrating up to 212mm of rolled homogeneous armor. The PGR (Pancel Granatkidobo Repesz) is a fragmentation grenade. Both grenades weigh approximately 0.65-0.67 kg. The gas shutoff valve must be closed before launching grenades to prevent cycling. Very obscure weapon with limited production numbers; primarily issued to designated grenadiers within Hungarian infantry squads.
