About
What it is, and why it matters
The Fox CE Grade is a high-grade side-by-side double-barrel shotgun in the A.H. Fox Gun Company's lettered range, built on the same hammerless boxlock action as the entry A-Grade but fitted with automatic ejectors (denoted by the 'E' suffix) and finer decoration. Chambered most commonly in 12 gauge with 2 3/4-inch chambers, it used Krupp Fluid Steel barrels, typically 30 inches long with a solid rib, double triggers, and a checkered walnut stock. The case-hardened receiver carried hand-cut game-scene engraving of quail, woodcock and an English Setter, placing the CE well above the plainer C, B and A grades while remaining a working field gun.
Ansley H. Fox marketed his guns as 'The Finest Gun in the World.' The graded Fox line ran from the plain A up through the CE, DE and the top FE and XE grades; each higher grade added finer walnut, more elaborate hand engraving and, in the 'E' grades, automatic ejectors. Theodore Roosevelt famously carried a custom FE-grade Fox on his 1909-1910 African safari.
The C grade was among the first models offered when Ansley H. Fox began production in 1905-1906; the CE is the ejector-equipped, higher-finish version. Weight of about 3,150 g (just under 7 lb) and 1,195 mm overall length are typical figures for a 12-gauge with 30-inch barrels; 28- and 32-inch barrels were also offered. Factory letters on individual A.H. Fox guns are available through the Savage historian. A.H. Fox was acquired by Savage Arms in 1929, with production continuing at Utica, New York into the early 1940s.
