What it is, and why it matters
The Arizmendi Singer is a compact .25 ACP semi-automatic pocket pistol produced by the Eibar firm of Francisco Arizmendi y Goenaga in Spain. A simple straight-blowback design derived from the Browning pattern, it was one of the firm's principal automatics alongside the Walman, Victor and Ydeal, the Singer name effectively replacing the earlier Victor. Later examples adopted improvements such as a chamber-loaded indicator that allowed the user to tell by sight or touch whether a cartridge was chambered. Fitted with a frame-mounted thumb safety and a magazine safety but no grip safety, the Singer was considered one of the better-made Spanish pocket pistols of its era.
The Singer was named to evoke quality and reliability in the crowded Eibar pocket-pistol market of the early 20th century, where dozens of small Spanish workshops competed by branding near-identical Browning-pattern automatics with catchy, often borrowed, commercial names.
Arizmendi was regarded as one of the more competent Eibar makers and the Singer pistols were well finished compared to many contemporary Spanish pocket automatics.
