What it is, and why it matters
The High Standard Model 10 is a gas-operated, semi-automatic, 12-gauge bullpup shotgun produced from 1967 to 1977. Conceived by Santa Monica police sergeant Alfred Crouch as a compact one-handed entry weapon and developed by High Standard from their Supermatic autoloader, it placed the action behind the trigger to achieve a short 686 mm overall length with an 18-inch barrel. The Model 10 was offered in two variants, the original 10A with an integral carrying-handle flashlight rib and the improved 10B with separate sights, dual cocking handles, and a detachable flashlight mount. Marketed primarily to law enforcement, it was an early bullpup shotgun but suffered from reliability problems and limited four-round capacity that led most agencies to abandon it.
The bullpup concept was devised around 1957 by Santa Monica, California police sergeant Alfred Crouch, who wanted a shotgun that could be fired and reloaded with one hand; he sold the design to High Standard around 1965.
One of the earliest production bullpup shotguns. The fixed left-hand-only ejection and rotating buttplate made it awkward for some shooters, and standard-pressure shells could short-cycle the gas system.
