What it is, and why it matters
The Mannlicher Karabijn No. 3 is one of the numbered carbine derivatives of the Dutch Geweer M.95 service rifle, a bolt-action repeater chambered in 6.5x53R and issued to engineer and artillery troops. Like the other M.95 carbines it retains Ferdinand Mannlicher's turn-bolt action and a five-round en-bloc clip feeding a fixed integral magazine, on a barrel shortened to roughly 450 mm for handier carriage by specialist and mounted personnel. The No. 3 was distinguished from the companion cavalry, Marechaussee and bicycle-troop carbines chiefly by its stock, sling and bayonet fittings rather than by any change to the action or barrel.
The M.95 spawned more than a dozen carbine sub-variants because each branch - engineers, artillery, cavalry, cyclists and constabulary - insisted on its own stock, sling or bayonet fitting bolted onto the very same Mannlicher action.
The Dutch fielded a large family of numbered Mannlicher carbines (No. 1 cavalry, No. 2 Marechaussee/mounted, No. 3 engineers and artillery, No. 4 bicycle troops), differing mainly in stock, sling and bayonet arrangement rather than in the action or barrel. Most were produced under license at the Hembrug arsenal in Zaandam. An exact separate weight figure for the No. 3 is not reliably recorded; companion carbines run roughly 3.0-3.4 kg.
