What it is, and why it matters
The Mannlicher Karabijn No. 4 is a Dutch bolt-action carbine chambered in 6.5x53R, a shortened variant of the Geweer M.95 service rifle designed in 1909 for the Netherlands' bicycle infantry troops. Built at the Hembrug arsenal in Zaandam, it retained Ferdinand Mannlicher's turn-bolt action and en-bloc clip feeding a fixed five-round magazine, and was distinguished by a wooden fairing over the projecting magazine to keep it from snagging. With a 450 mm barrel and an overall length of about 951 mm it was far handier than the full-length rifle.
The No. 4 was the carbine of the Dutch bicycle infantry, whose regiments pedaled to the front on folding bicycles; its short length and wooden magazine cover were tailored to being carried slung while riding.
One of several M.95 carbine models (No. 1 through No. 5) that differed mainly in sling arrangement and intended user. The No. 4 was issued specifically to bicycle-mounted (wielrijder) units.
