What it is, and why it matters
The Krag-Jorgensen M1895 is a Norwegian bolt-action cavalry carbine chambered in 6.5x55mm. Adopted by the Norwegian Army in 1895 as the Kavalerikarabin M/1895, it is a shortened carbine version of the M1894 service rifle, using the distinctive Krag-Jorgensen side-mounted hinged-door magazine that holds five loose rounds and its smooth, low-effort bolt throw. With a 520 mm barrel it was issued to cavalry troops; the near-identical M1897 mountain-artillery/engineer carbine differed only in how the sling swivel was fitted to the stock.
Norway's cavalry got the first short Krag: the M/1895 carbine trimmed the M1894 rifle down for mounted troops, and it was so close to the later M1897 artillery carbine that the two were built and counted together, distinguished only by where the sling swivel sat.
The M1895 cavalry carbine and the M1897 mountain-artillery/engineer carbine differed only in the sling-swivel arrangement and were manufactured in one combined series; a total of 9,309 were produced between 1898 and 1906.
