What it is, and why it matters
The Magpul FDP-9 (Folding Defensive Platform, 9mm) is a folding pistol-caliber firearm developed by Magpul Industries in collaboration with ZEV Technologies, finally released in 2025 after years of teaser marketing dating back to the 2008 FMG-9 concept video. The FDP-9 ships in pistol form (with the FDC-9 representing the carbine SBR variant) and uses a ZEV-built steel internal chassis derived from the OZ9 platform housed inside a Magpul polymer body. It feeds from Glock 17-pattern double-stack 9mm magazines and is bundled with two Magpul PMAG 21 GL9s, with the gun able to fold completely with a 27-round PMAG installed. A short 7-inch (178mm) barrel, fully ambidextrous controls, integrated flip-up irons in the carry handle, and a 1913 Picatinny optics rail round out the package. MSRP is approximately $1,600.
Magpul first teased the folding 9mm concept in their 2008 FMG-9 demo video - a viral clip showing what looked like a flashlight unfolding into a complete submachine gun in two seconds. The product spent the next seventeen years in legal and engineering limbo before Magpul partnered with ZEV Technologies to finally ship the FDP-9 in 2025, by which point an entire generation of internet shooters had grown up assuming the FMG-9 was vaporware.
The FDP-9 / FDC-9 is the long-anticipated production realization of Magpul's 2008 FMG-9 prototype, which was famously folded into a flashlight-sized package. Co-developed with ZEV Technologies, who supplies the steel internals based on their OZ9 platform. The FDC-9 variant is a registered SBR; the FDP-9 ships as a pistol with no shoulder stock.
