What it is, and why it matters
The Manurhin RMR is a French double-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, developed in the early 1980s as a more affordable service sidearm for the French National Police to succeed the precision-built but costly Manurhin MR 73. It was the product of a joint venture between Manurhin and the American firm Sturm, Ruger & Co.: Ruger supplied the frame and lockwork using its investment-casting (micro-fusion) techniques, while Manurhin manufactured the barrel and cylinder to the same standard as the MR 73. Produced only from 1981 to 1984, the RMR was relatively short-lived and was eventually replaced in French police service by the Manurhin Special Police F1.
The RMR grew out of the French National Police's need for a cheaper alternative to the superbly engineered but expensive Manurhin MR 73. By partnering with Sturm, Ruger & Co., Manurhin could substitute investment-cast components for labour-intensive forged-and-machined parts while keeping the Manurhin-made barrel and cylinder, blending French and American manufacturing.
The frame and mechanism were cast by Sturm, Ruger & Co. while the barrel and cylinder were made by Manurhin. Investment casting made the RMR less expensive to produce than the fully machined MR 73.
