Mondragón M1908

The Mondragón M1908 is a gas-operated, semi-automatic service rifle chambered primarily in 7x57mm Mauser, designed by Mexican Army General Manuel Mondragón and manufactured by Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) in Neuhausen, Switzerland. Patented in its refined form in 1908, it holds the distinction of being the first self-loading rifle formally adopted by a national army, entering service with the Mexican Federal Army under President Porfirio Díaz. Operated by a long-stroke gas piston driving a rotating multi-lug bolt, the Mondragón offered a selectable mode allowing the shooter to disengage the gas system and operate the action as a straight-pull manual repeater - a clever hedge against ammunition fouling and mechanical failure in field conditions. Standard rifles fed from 8- or 10-round detachable box magazines that could also be topped up via 5-round stripper clips through the open action. With a 577mm barrel, all-steel construction and European walnut stock, the Mondragón weighs approximately 4.18 kg empty and measures 1,105mm overall. Contracted for roughly 4,000 units at SIG, the rifle's service life was cut short by Mexico's political collapse into revolution; deliveries halted, and the surplus stock was eventually sold to Imperial Germany, where aviators adopted it as the FSK 15 equipped with a 30-round Trommelmagazin drum for use as an aerial self-defense weapon before the advent of purpose-built aircraft machine guns.
