Nambu Type 14

Designed by Kijiro Nambu -- often called 'the Japanese John Browning' -- the Type 14's silhouette was visibly inspired by the German Luger P08, earning it a superficial resemblance that belied vastly different internals and far inferior performance. The pistol was infamous for a weak striker spring that caused frequent misfires, particularly in cold or humid Pacific jungle conditions, and for magazines that could fall free at inopportune moments -- a flaw later addressed with a retention spring. Despite its mechanical quirks, the Type 14 remains one of the most iconic and widely collected war-trophy pistols of World War II.

The Type 14 was adopted three years after its 1925 introduction as the official sidearm for non-commissioned officers in 1927; commissioned officers were required to purchase their own pistols privately and often chose the Type 14. The designation comes from the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Taisho. Production occurred at multiple Japanese arsenals: Nagoya Arsenal was the primary producer, with Kokura Arsenal producing the earliest pistols in 1925-1926, and the Nambu Rifle Manufacturing Company (Nambu-Ju-Seizosho) handling private production from 1928 onward. Type 14 pistols are stamped with production month and Showa-era year of manufacture (e.g., 17.8 = August 1942). Early pistols featured slotted cocking knobs and 25-line serrated beech grips; later production used knurled knobs and Philippine mahogany grips, while late-war 'slab' grips (from November 1944) were ungrooved. The pistol lacks a grip safety that was present on earlier Type A and B Nambus. The 8x22mm Nambu cartridge is a bottlenecked, rimless round unique to Japanese service arms and the Type 100 submachine gun. Many Type 14 pistols were captured by Allied forces as war trophies in the Pacific and remain prized collector items. Some Type 14s saw post-war use by Indonesian forces during the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch colonial rule.
