About

What it is, and why it matters

Copy a link to this section

The Northwood Developments M77 is a Rhodesian 9x19mm blowback-operated pistol-caliber carbine designed by former RAF engineer Roger Mansfield and built in Salisbury (now Harare). Part of a modular system sharing a common receiver with the R76 pistol, it accepted four interchangeable barrels and either a collapsible wire or fixed wood stock, feeding from standard Browning Hi-Power magazines. Production versions were semi-automatic only as required by Rhodesian law, with only a handful of select-fire prototypes made for military evaluation.

One of the very few firearms designed and mass-produced in Rhodesia, the Northwood M77 was the brainchild of an ex-RAF engineer and cleverly borrowed Browning Hi-Power magazines so owners could feed it from an already-common pistol mag.

Physical dimensions, weight, and muzzle-velocity figures are not documented in surviving sources. About 2,000 carbines were built before Rhodesian production ended around 1980, with most remaining in-country and some reaching South Africa.

Trajectory

What the round does downrange

Solved from the muzzle figures and the bullet. The dashed rule is the effective range on the record, and the crosses are the steps the solver returned.

No load solved for this record yetThe flight path is computed from a cartridge and a bullet. This record has no ammunition filed against its chambering, so there is nothing to solve.
