About
What it is, and why it matters
The Pindad SS1-R5 Raider is a compact special-forces carbine sub-variant of the Indonesian SS1, itself a license-built derivative of the FN FNC. With a 249 mm barrel and skeletonized side-folding stock, the R5 is the lightest and slimmest of the SS1 family, intended for special infantry Raider battalions, Kostrad, and Kopassus operations including jungle, mountain, marsh, sea and urban warfare. It accepts standard SS1 magazines and a wide variety of optics.
The Raider battalions for which the SS1-R5 was developed were stood up in 2003 after Indonesian command observed that conventional infantry struggled in the Aceh jungle, prompting Pindad to commission the most compact possible SS1 to fit the new lighter battle dress.
The R5 designation distinguishes the special-forces Raider variant from the SS1-V5 compact carbine for engineers and rear-echelon troops. Although based on the same short barrel, the R5 features a lighter receiver, refined ergonomics and accessory rails.
