The 7.62 TKIV 85 (Tarkkuuskivääri 85, meaning Precision Rifle Model 1985) is a Finnish military sniper rifle built on a heavily modified Mosin-Nagant M1891/10 action. Designed by Valmet in 1984, the TKIV 85 represents Finland's tradition of extracting exceptional accuracy from Mosin-based platforms, a legacy stretching back to the legendary Finnish snipers of the Winter War. The rifle features a new cold hammer-forged barrel manufactured by Valmet, an adjustable laminated wood stock with cheek piece, and is chambered for the distinctive Finnish 7.62x53R cartridge. Despite its archaic Mosin action heritage, the TKIV 85 delivers excellent accuracy and has served the Finnish military reliably since entering service in 1988.
The TKIV 85 continues Finland's legendary tradition of Mosin-based sniper rifles that began with Simo Häyhä, the 'White Death,' who achieved over 500 confirmed kills during the Winter War of 1939-1940 using an M/28-30 Mosin-Nagant. Finnish armorers have historically been regarded as among the finest in the world at accurizing the Mosin action, and the TKIV 85 represents the ultimate evolution of that craft.
The TKIV 85 is unique in being one of the last military sniper rifles to be built on the Mosin-Nagant action. The Finnish 7.62x53R cartridge is dimensionally very similar to the Russian 7.62x54R but is manufactured to tighter C.I.P. specifications. Standard optics include either the Zeiss Diavari 1.5-6x42 or Schmidt & Bender 4x36 telescopic sights. The rifle officially entered service with the Finnish Defence Forces in 1988 and remained in frontline use until being supplemented by newer Sako TRG-based rifles. Finland's long tradition of precision marksmanship, dating to Simo Häyhä and the Winter War, directly influenced the design requirements for this rifle.
