The AMD-65's enormous double-slotted muzzle brake is so effective at taming recoil that it became the weapon's most instantly recognizable feature, but it generates such punishing concussion and noise that shooters positioned beside the operator often complained of discomfort.
The AMD-65 was Hungary's solution to the same problem the Soviet AKS-74U addressed - providing mechanized troops with a compact weapon. However, while the Soviets chose to shorten the newer 5.45mm AK-74, Hungary shortened the 7.62mm AKM, resulting in greater muzzle flash and blast. The distinctive double-slot muzzle brake is very effective at reducing felt recoil but generates significant noise and concussion for the shooter. The wire-frame folding stock is lightweight but provides minimal cheek weld. Produced from 1967 until Hungary retired the type in 2006, replacing it with Czech CZ 2000 and later FN SCAR rifles. The AMD-65 saw extensive export and combat use across Africa, Central America, and the Middle East. It was notably used by private military contractors including Blackwater in Iraq. Despite retirement from Hungarian service, the AMD-65 remains in use by numerous nations and non-state actors worldwide. Compatible with all standard AKM/AK-47 magazines.
