What it is, and why it matters
The APS-95 is a Croatian 5.56x45mm NATO assault rifle developed in the mid-1990s by RH-Alan as a licensed derivative of the Israeli IMI Galil. Gas-operated with a rotating bolt and selective fire, it was distinguished from the Galil mainly by an integrated 1.5x optical sight that doubles as a carrying handle, with backup iron sights. It was adopted by the Croatian Army in 1995 to replace aging M70 rifles, though financial constraints kept the planned rearmament incomplete.
Croatia ran the Galil through a national rebranding: the APS-95 is mechanically the Israeli rifle, but its signature feature is a stubby optical scope grafted onto the top that also serves as the carrying handle, giving troops a 1.5x sight as standard at a time when most issue rifles still relied on bare iron sights.
The 1.5x optical sight uses a ring-and-dot reticle effective to roughly 400 meters. Externally distinct from the Galil but mechanically nearly identical, sharing the Kalashnikov-derived long-stroke gas piston layout the Galil itself inherited.
