The Calico M950 is an American semi-automatic personal defense weapon introduced in June 1989 by Calico Light Weapons Systems. Designed by Mike Miller and Warren Stockton, it chambers 9×19mm Parabellum and operates on a roller-delayed blowback action borrowed conceptually from the H&K MP5. Its defining feature is a top-mounted helical (spiral) drum magazine holding 50 or 100 rounds, paired with downward brass ejection - giving it a futuristic profile that made it a staple of 1980s/90s sci-fi cinema. With a 6-inch barrel, ~1 kg empty weight, and ~360 mm overall length, it straddles the pistol/PDW category. Production was always limited; the platform was briefly revived in the 2000s as the 'Liberty' series before parent company CLWS ceased operations in 2024.
Cartridges spiral around an Archimedes-style central screw inside the drum, advancing one position per shot. Combined with downward brass ejection and overhead magazine position, it produces a silhouette unlike any other firearm - which is exactly why it became a fixture of late-1980s/early-1990s sci-fi cinema, including Total Recall (1990), RoboCop 2 (1990), Bad Boys (1995), and Blade (1998).
Helical magazine requires manual pre-winding (~10 turns for 50-rd, ~23 turns for 100-rd) before firing. 1994 Assault Weapons Ban effectively killed civilian helical-mag sales for a decade. Source variance on weight: Wikipedia 2.25 lb (1021 g) is the canonical bare weight; spec sheets sometimes list ~1200 g loaded.
