What it is, and why it matters
The Carpati Md. 95 is a Romanian compact double-action semi-automatic pistol chambered in .380 ACP (9mm Browning Short), developed in the mid-1990s by Fabrica de Arme Cugir as a commercial export evolution of the earlier .32 ACP Carpati Md. 74. Loosely based on the Walther PP, it is a simple blowback design with an exposed hammer and a fixed barrel. Unlike the alloy-framed Md. 74, the Md. 95 uses heavier all-steel construction and a single-stack seven-round magazine. The slide carries a manual safety with an automatic decocking function and fixed iron sights. The pistol was imported into the United States in limited numbers by Century International Arms between roughly 1996 and 1999.
The Carpati line traces back to Cugir's Cold War-era pocket pistol for Romanian police and security services, itself a riff on the Walther PP. When that market dried up after 1989, Cugir reworked the design for Western commercial export, swapping the alloy frame for steel and the .32 ACP chambering for the more common .380 ACP to suit the American concealed-carry market.
Export models were frequently shipped with the right-side decock lever omitted. A tear-gas (less-lethal) variant was briefly marketed in Europe.
