About
What it is, and why it matters
The Daewoo DR300 is a South Korean semi-automatic rifle, a civilian, 7.62x39mm-chambered derivative of the military K2 service rifle. Built around the K2's long-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt, it was produced in the mid-1990s as a sporting export for the United States market and fitted with a thumbhole stock and reduced-capacity magazines to comply with the era's import and assault-weapon restrictions. It pairs the inexpensive AK-pattern 7.62x39mm cartridge with the K2's Western-influenced controls and ergonomics.
The DR300 is the rarer 7.62x39mm sibling of the more common 5.56mm DR200, both built from the K2 military rifle for the U.S. civilian market. Their thumbhole stocks were a direct response to 1990s import and assault-weapon legislation, and the guns have since become sought-after curiosities among collectors of foreign sporting rifles.
Imported into the United States by Kimber as a post-Assault Weapons Ban configuration. Production and import numbers were small, making surviving examples uncommon collectibles.
