What it is, and why it matters
The 39/AM Danuvia is an experimental folding-stock version of the Hungarian 39M submachine gun designed by Pal Kiraly and built by Danuvia, chambered for the powerful 9x25mm Mauser Export cartridge. It retains the 39M's two-stage lever-delayed blowback action, long 500 mm barrel and forward-folding 40-round magazine, but replaces the fixed rifle-style stock with a hinged wooden stock that folds to shorten the weapon for transport. Only 276 were delivered to the Royal Hungarian Army in 1940; the hinged wooden stock proved unsatisfactory and was abandoned in favour of the metal underfolding stock adopted on the 43M.
Pal Kiraly tried to make his rifle-length 39M easier to carry by putting a hinge in the middle of its wooden stock, but the folding wooden joint was fragile and awkward, so after just 276 guns the Hungarians dropped it and switched to the sturdier metal underfolding stock that became the 43M.
The 39/AM (Hungarian 39A.M) is a rare transitional variant between the fixed-stock 39M and the metal-underfolding 43M. Its hinged wooden folding stock was judged unsuccessful. Base specifications are shared with the 39M; the folded length of the wooden hinge stock is not documented in accessible sources.
