What it is, and why it matters
The ERO (Strojnica ERO) is a Croatian submachine gun that is a near-exact copy of the Israeli IMI Uzi, chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. Developed from 1991 and produced from 1992 by the Croatian firm Arma during the Croatian War of Independence, it shares the Uzi's blowback action, telescoping wrap-around bolt, and grip-housed magazine feed. A grip safety on the rear of the pistol grip is its main visible distinction from the original. The compact Mini-ERO was derived from the Micro-Uzi and Mini-Uzi.
Cut off from foreign arms supplies during the Yugoslav Wars, Croatia reverse-engineered the Israeli Uzi down to nearly every part, adding only a grip safety so closely that ERO magazines and the Uzi's interchange.
Most ERO specifications mirror the full-size IMI Uzi it copies. Weight figures vary by source (about 3.5-3.7 kg empty). A grip safety distinguishes it from the Israeli original. The Mini-ERO uses a folding stock derived from the vz.61 Skorpion (Model 84 in Croatian service).
