What it is, and why it matters
The FN P90 TR (Triple Rail) is a select-fire personal defense weapon variant of the standard P90, introduced in late 1999 to replace the original integrated reflex sight with a MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rail interface. The receiver hosts a single full-length top rail and two short side accessory-rail stumps, allowing the operator to mount any standard optic, weapon-light, or laser without the constraints of FN's proprietary sight base. Like the standard P90, it retains the bullpup layout, 50-round top-loading horizontal magazine, ambidextrous downward-ejecting design, and 5.7x28mm armor-piercing-capable cartridge. The TR is the dominant P90 variant currently produced and fielded.
When FN released the original P90 in 1990 with its proprietary integrated reflex sight, customers loved the gun but hated being locked into one optic - so by 1999 FN gave in, ripped the sight off, and bolted on a Picatinny rail. The TR has outsold the original P90 ever since.
A semi-automatic-only civilian/LE carbine variant with a 16-inch barrel is sold in the US as the PS90 (with a discontinued PS90 TR triple-rail version). The military P90 TR retains select-fire capability.
