The Husqvarna 1640 is a Swedish bolt-action hunting rifle produced by Husqvarna Vapenfabrik from 1953 until 1969. It is built on the company's in-house HVA 1600-series action, a refined small-ring Mauser 98 design featuring controlled round feed and a hinged floorplate, and was offered in a range of popular American and European cartridges including the .30-06 Springfield. Prized for its high-quality machining, slim sporter stock and reliable Mauser-pattern action, the 1640 became a sought-after surplus and collector hunting rifle.
Husqvarna's gun-making roots stretch back to 1689, and the 1640 represents the high point of its postwar sporting-rifle line before the firm exited rifle manufacture and handed its designs to FFV/Carl Gustaf.
Husqvarna initially imported Mauser 98 actions from FN Herstal in Belgium beginning in 1939, then developed its own improved 1600-series action, unveiled in 1953, on which the 1640 was built. Rifle production was later transferred to FFV/Carl Gustaf.
