About
What it is, and why it matters
The Jati-Matic is a Finnish 9x19mm submachine gun designed by Jali Timari and introduced in 1983. Its defining feature is an off-axis blowback bolt that recoils up an inclined plane set at an angle to the bore; this geometry brakes the bolt and counteracts muzzle climb, allowing controllable one-handed automatic fire from a compact, stockless package. It was reintroduced in 1995 by Oy Golden Gun Ltd as the GG-95 PDW.
The Jati-Matic's inclined-bolt anti-climb design made it a darling of 1980s action cinema, most memorably as Sylvester Stallone's sidearm in Cobra, despite being a near-total commercial flop with only around 400 guns ever made.
Commercial failure: only about 400 units were built before production ceased in 1986. The weapon was evaluated by but never adopted by the Finnish military. It gained pop-culture recognition through its appearance in the 1986 film Cobra.
