What it is, and why it matters
The Mannlicher M1886 is an Austro-Hungarian straight-pull, en bloc clip-fed service rifle designed by Ferdinand Mannlicher and produced by the Steyr works (OEWG). Adopted in 1886 and chambered for the black-powder 11x58mmR Werndl cartridge, it was the first straight-pull bolt-action service rifle adopted by any nation, using a wedge-lock (Blocksystem) breech and a five-round integral box magazine fed by an en bloc clip. Most examples were later converted to the smaller 8x52mmR Mannlicher as the M1886/88.
The M1886 gave the Austro-Hungarian army the world's first straight-pull service rifle, letting a soldier cycle the bolt with a single back-and-forth push rather than the four-motion turn-bolt stroke of contemporaries like the Mauser 71.
The M1886 wedge-lock action was quickly superseded by the M1888 and the improved M1895 rotary-bolt straight-pull. Because most rifles were rebuilt as M1886/88 conversions, unaltered 11mm M1886 rifles are comparatively rare.
