About
What it is, and why it matters
The Chilean Mauser Model 1895 was the first major refinement of the small-ring Model 1893 pattern, adding a cylindrical bolt face and detail improvements while retaining the 7x57mm chambering and five-round flush internal magazine. Built by Ludwig Loewe & Co. and DWM in Berlin for the Chilean Army and Navy, it became the standard Chilean service rifle and was produced in long rifle, mosqueton and carbine configurations.
Boer commandos bought the flat-shooting smokeless Model 1895 Mauser cheaply and nicknamed it the 'Plezier Mauser'; the punishment British infantry took from it in the Second Boer War directly shaped the development of the SMLE and the Pattern 1913/1914 Enfield.
The same Model 1895 contract pattern was also supplied to the Boer republics and several Latin American states; receivers carry either Loewe or DWM markings depending on production year.
