What it is, and why it matters
The MTs 5 is a Soviet over/under double-barrel hunting shotgun developed at the TsKIB SOO design bureau in Tula and produced from 1950 to 1982. A high-grade break-action smoothbore with vertically stacked barrels, internal hammers and double triggers, it was chambered in a range of gauges (12, 16, 20, 28 and 32) with 70 mm chambers and 675 mm barrels. Regarded as a quality sporting gun, it featured an automatic tang safety, a shared non-automatic ejector, and finely engraved receivers with checkered walnut furniture.
The 'MTs' (МЦ) prefix stands for 'Model TsKIB', marking guns built by Tula's Central Design and Research Bureau of Sporting and Hunting Arms — the same workshop that hand-built Soviet Olympic and presentation-grade firearms.
The front trigger fires the lower barrel. Chokes were lightly constricted (about 0.1 mm) on both barrels. A combination-gun derivative, the MTs 5-12, paired a 5.6 mm (.22 LR) rimfire upper barrel with a 32-gauge smoothbore lower barrel.
