What it is, and why it matters
The Orița M1949 is a Romanian blowback-operated, open-bolt submachine gun chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, a post-war paratrooper variant of the wartime Orița M1941. Distinguished from the fixed-wooden-stock M1948 by its folding metal buttstock for airborne and vehicle-crew use, it retained the family's machined-steel construction, wooden pistol grip, and 25- or 32-round detachable box magazine. Built at the Cugir works, it served the Romanian Army into the early 1970s before being displaced by AK-pattern weapons.
Named for Captain Marin Orița of the Romanian Army's Military Technical Corps, the Orița was one of the very few indigenous submachine guns fielded by a minor Axis power in WWII, and its rare folding-stock M1949 was tailored for Romania's fledgling airborne troops.
The Md. 1949 is a rare folding-stock version intended for paratroopers; sources variously group it with the improved post-war Orița models (M1948/M1949). Barrel length is reported as 278-287 mm across sources.
