What it is, and why it matters
The Port Said is the Egyptian licensed copy of the Swedish Carl Gustaf m/45 'Swedish K' submachine gun, produced by the Maadi Company (Factory 54). An exact copy of the m/45, it is a 9x19mm Parabellum, open-bolt, simple-blowback weapon with a side-folding tubular wire stock and a 36-round double-column box magazine. A simplified domestic version was fielded alongside it under the name Akaba.
When Sweden, citing its policy of neutrality, embargoed sales of the Carl Gustaf m/45 to nations at war, Egypt simply licensed and built its own under the name 'Port Said' and carried it through three Arab-Israeli wars.
Egypt produced both the 'Port Said', an exact copy of the Carl Gustaf m/45, and the 'Akaba', a simplified version. Both served the Egyptian military through the Arab-Israeli wars before being supplanted by AK-pattern weapons.
