What it is, and why it matters
The Remington Model 30 is an American bolt-action sporting rifle built on the controlled-feed M1917 Enfield (Pattern 14) action that Remington had mass-produced during World War I. Introduced in 1921 in .30-06 Springfield, it adapted surplus military tooling and parts into a civilian hunting rifle, retaining the strong claw-extractor action and distinctive dogleg bolt handle. The later Model 30 Express family expanded the chambering options and refined the stock, and the line ran until 1940. It was one of Remington's first modern high-power bolt-action sporting rifles and a forerunner of the Model 720 and Model 700.
The Model 30 grew directly out of Remington's wartime contract to build the M1917 Enfield for the U.S. military; with the war over and tooling idle, Remington turned the leftover Enfield action into a sporting rifle, giving civilian hunters access to one of the strongest bolt actions of the era.
Roughly 3,000 of the original Model 30 were built between 1921 and 1925 before the improved Model 30 Express superseded it; the Express family and its variants brought total production to about 22,000-23,000 rifles by 1940. Express chamberings later included .25 Remington, 7x57mm Mauser, and .257 Roberts.
