Ruger LC9s

The LC9s was born from one of the most decisive product pivots in modern firearms history. When the original hammer-fired LC9 debuted in 2011, its heavy double-action trigger drew immediate and persistent criticism from concealed carry enthusiasts who compared it unfavorably to the smoother triggers of the Kahr PM9 and S&W Shield. Ruger's engineering team responded by completely redesigning the fire control system, and the striker-fired LC9s instantly transformed the platform from a mediocre seller into a market leader. The 's' suffix became synonymous with 'fixed it.' However, the LC9s reign was cut short by the micro-compact revolution when the SIG P365 proved in 2018 that double-stack capacity could fit in a single-stack-sized frame, rendering the 7-round LC9s obsolete almost overnight.

The original LC9 (Lightweight Compact 9mm) was introduced in 2011 with a hammer-fired double-action-only trigger that drew widespread criticism for its long, heavy pull. Ruger responded in 2014 with the LC9s, completely replacing the fire control group with a striker-fired mechanism that reduced trigger pull to approximately 5.5 pounds (24.5 N) with a short take-up and crisp break. The LC9s Pro variant, introduced in late 2014, omitted the manual safety and magazine disconnect for users who preferred a simpler manual of arms. The barrel features 1:10-inch right-hand rifling with 6 grooves. The pistol is not rated for +P ammunition. The LC9s was effectively replaced in Ruger's lineup by the MAX-9 in 2021, which offered 10-12 round capacity in a similarly sized package, and the budget-oriented EC9s which featured integral sights for cost savings. Production of the LC9s wound down around 2019. Despite its discontinuation, the LC9s remains widely available on the used market and its magazines are compatible with the EC9s.
