What it is, and why it matters
The SR-2 Veresk is a Russian compact submachine gun / personal defense weapon developed in the late 1990s by TsNIITochMash to chamber the powerful 9x21mm Gyurza armor-piercing pistol cartridge. Unlike most blowback-operated SMGs, the Veresk uses a gas-operated rotating bolt action borrowed from the AS Val/SR-3 Vikhr family, allowing it to safely contain Gyurza's high chamber pressure while remaining compact and controllable. It is issued primarily to Russian special-purpose police and intelligence units.
The SR-2 was nicknamed 'Veresk' (Russian for 'heather') and was specifically designed around the 9x21mm Gyurza cartridge after Russian special forces complained that even submachine gun rounds bounced off the modern body armor worn by organized crime hit squads in the 1990s.
The 9x21mm Gyurza armor-piercing rounds (SP-10/SP-11/SP-13) defeat Class IIIA body armor at 100 m, making the Veresk a true PDW in the modern sense. The SR-2M variant is the current production standard.
