What it is, and why it matters
The Standard Products M1 Carbine was the wartime output of the Standard Products Company of Port Clinton, Ohio, one of the eleven prime contractors that built the U.S. M1 Carbine during World War II. Between April 1943 and May 1944 the firm produced approximately 247,160 carbines (about 4 percent of total wartime output), marking receivers 'S' or 'STD-PROD' under serial blocks 1,982,500 to 2,352,519. Mechanically identical to other M1 Carbines, it is a gas-operated, short-stroke piston, semi-automatic .30 Carbine carbine fed from a detachable box magazine.
Standard Products of Port Clinton, Ohio was an automotive parts manufacturer converted to wartime arms production, turning out a quarter-million carbines from a small Lake Erie factory town.
Standard Products receivers are marked 'STD-PROD' or 'S'. The company also produced carbine barrels and parts subcontracted to other makers.
