What it is, and why it matters
The Ugram is an Indian 7.62x51mm NATO assault rifle developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) of the DRDO in partnership with private firm Dvipa Armour India. Unveiled in January 2024, it uses a short-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, selective single-shot and fully automatic fire, a 20-round detachable box magazine and a monolithic Picatinny rail. Its rivet-free construction is intended to give a robust, lightweight (under 4 kg) and reliable platform for the Indian armed forces, paramilitary units and state police in counter-insurgency and conventional roles.
Developed in a reportedly short timeframe of around 100 days, the Ugram was showcased as a demonstration of India's indigenous small-arms capability and is sometimes compared to the SIG Sauer 716 battle rifle in service with the Indian Army.
UGRAM is a Hindi word meaning 'ferocious' or 'aggressive'. As of its 2024 unveiling the rifle is a prototype requiring further internal, acceptance and user trials before potential induction; it has been evaluated as a possible 7.62mm replacement for the 5.56mm INSAS.
