What it is, and why it matters
The Daewoo K7 is an integrally suppressed 9x19mm submachine gun developed by Daewoo Telecom (now S&T Motiv) in collaboration with the Korean Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, entering service in 2001. Based on the lower of the K1A carbine but reworked to a simple blowback action, it features a permanently attached integral suppressor surrounding a ported barrel, allowing subsonic-velocity fire without an external silencer. Designed as an indigenous Korean alternative to the H&K MP5SD.
The K7 was developed specifically because the H&K MP5SD was considered too expensive for wide ROK special-operations issue; Korea wanted a domestic, integrally suppressed SMG that could be produced at a fraction of German prices. The result reuses K1A carbine ergonomics so closely that Korean special forces troops can transition between the two weapons without retraining their manual of arms.
The K7 uses standard 9mm ammunition fired through a ported barrel; the suppressor and porting bleed gas to keep velocity subsonic. It accepts STANAG 9mm magazines as well as Uzi and Beretta M12 magazines. Issued to ROK special operations forces.
