The Dan-Inject JM Special is a compact Danish CO2-powered veterinary tranquilizer dart rifle built for the remote immobilization of wildlife from helicopters and vehicles. Rather than a lethal firearm, it fires a self-injecting projectile syringe (dart) propelled by adjustable compressed CO2 pressure, delivering anaesthetic or medication to an animal from a distance. Its very short 65 cm body is an advantage when working in the confined space of an aircraft cabin, while a quickly detachable 11 mm rifled extension barrel can be fitted to extend the overall length to about 125 cm and restore accuracy for longer-range darting, making it a genuinely multi-purpose injection rifle.
DANiNJECT rifles are a mainstay of modern wildlife conservation, used to sedate rhinos, elephants, big cats and other animals for medical treatment, translocation and anti-poaching relocation programmes. The short JM Special is favoured for aerial darting, where operators lean out of a helicopter to sedate free-ranging animals across the plains of Africa and beyond.
Overall length is roughly 65 cm in compact form and about 125 cm with the rifled extension barrel fitted; weight is around 3 kg including accessories. Effective darting range from helicopters or vehicles is typically 15-20 m. The propulsion pressure is manually adjustable so the same dart can be fired accurately across a range of distances, and a single CO2 charge supports several shots. It is a remote drug-delivery injection system, not a conventional firearm, and in most jurisdictions is regulated as veterinary/animal-capture equipment.
