What it is, and why it matters
The IMI Galil ARM 7.62 is the full-power 7.62x51mm NATO chambering of the Galil ARM (Assault Rifle and Machine-gun), the AK-pattern rotating-bolt rifle developed by Israel Military Industries from Yisrael Galili's design. The 7.62 ARM retains the heavy machined receiver, folding stock, integral folding bipod, carrying handle and wire-cutter of the 5.56mm ARM while firing the full-power NATO cartridge, giving it battle-rifle reach and penetration. It feeds from a 25-round steel box magazine and uses a long-stroke gas piston system derived from the Finnish RK 62 / Kalashnikov lineage.
Galil's designers reportedly built a bottle opener into the handguard after troops were prying bottle caps off with the rifle's bipod legs and bending them.
The 7.62mm Galil was developed in parallel with the 5.56mm version; Israel ultimately adopted the 5.56mm ARM/SAR/AR, while the 7.62mm models found export users. The ARM is the heaviest, most fully-featured Galil variant, configured as a squad automatic with bipod and handguard handle.
