What it is, and why it matters
The Milkor 37/38mm MAR (Multiple Anti-Riot) is a South African six-shot, revolver-type less-lethal launcher introduced by Milkor in 2006 as a crowd-control derivative of the company's 40mm MGL grenade launcher. Built around a spring-wound rotating cylinder that indexes automatically with each double-action trigger pull, it lets a single operator deliver six 37/38mm less-lethal munitions in rapid succession. Deliberately configured to be incapable of chambering or arming standards-based lethal 40mm grenades, the MAR fires rubber baton rounds, chemical-irritant and smoke projectiles for riot and public-order operations.
Milkor introduced the MAR in 2006 specifically so that police could not accidentally load a live 40mm high-explosive grenade into a crowd-control launcher; the receiver and cylinder are dimensioned to physically reject lethal grenade rounds.
The MAR shares the multi-shot revolver mechanism of the Milkor MGL but is dimensionally and mechanically restricted to less-lethal 37/38mm ammunition. Several physical dimensions are inferred from the parent MGL platform; effective range varies widely by munition type.
