What it is, and why it matters
The PP-90M1 is a Russian 9x19mm submachine gun developed by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau in the 1990s as a compact, lightweight police weapon. Its most distinctive feature is a 64-round helical (auger-type) magazine mounted along the top of the receiver, with the gun also able to accept a conventional 32-round box magazine. It is select-fire, blowback-operated, and cocked via a button located just above the muzzle. Despite the designation, it is not a derivative of the earlier folding PP-90 clandestine submachine gun.
Its 64-round helical magazine works like a corkscrew, spiraling cartridges along the top of the gun so a shooter carries nearly twice a normal load without a long box magazine sticking out the bottom.
The 64-round helical magazine gives high onboard capacity without a long protruding box. Effective combat firing is also possible with 7N31 high-pressure 9x19mm loads.
