The GF5 designation reflects its forged construction: an FN cold hammer-forged chrome-lined chrome-moly-vanadium barrel paired with a hammer-forged bolt, carrier, and blended 4340 steel front trunnion on a stamped receiver. It operates on the classic Kalashnikov long-stroke gas piston system and typically ships with an ALG AKT enhanced trigger.
Palmetto State Armory's GF series evolved through successive generations of AK production as the company sought to build a fully American-made Kalashnikov; the GF5 adopted the FN cold hammer-forged barrel to improve barrel life and consistency over earlier GF3 stamped rifles.
The GF5 represents PSA's fifth-generation forged AK effort, positioned as a durable domestically produced Kalashnikov clone. Offered in multiple furniture configurations including classic wood (Nutmeg, Redwood), MOEkov, and black polymer.
