What it is, and why it matters
The XT112 is a Taiwanese AR-15-pattern assault rifle developed by the 205th Armory of the Armaments Bureau and unveiled at the 2023 Taipei Aerospace and Defense Industry Exhibition. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and fed from a 30-round transparent polymer magazine, it is intended to replace the older T91 and T65K2 service rifles in Republic of China Army service. The XT112 introduces fully ambidextrous controls, an improved sighting system with distance measurement, a thickened barrel for tighter shot groupings, an integrated bipod in the foregrip, and a case deflector to protect left-handed shooters. It weighs about 3.5 kg and is rated effective out to roughly 600 meters.
Developed by Taiwan's 205th Armory as a modernized domestic service rifle, the XT112 was designed to bring the Republic of China Army's small arms up to current AR-pattern standards with ambidextrous ergonomics and improved accuracy and barrel life over the long-serving T91 and T65 families.
Achieves shot groupings of about 9.8 cm at 100 meters, compared with roughly 14.5 cm for the T91. Barrel life is reported to be increased over the T91, with figures of up to 10,000-18,000 rounds cited in different sources. The Taiwanese Army is reported to be procuring 25,000 rifles. Firing modes are commonly described as semi-automatic, two-round burst, and fully automatic; some sources add a safe position as a fourth selector setting.
